While that is a great tune , especially since it has Larry Carlton doing the guitar solos, I’m kind of partial to the original, more jazzy theme. I love the bass work on this one:
My DVR still records this show daily. It’s always nice to watch an old favorite whenever the mood strikes. Growing up, watching Magnum was one thing that got everybody in the house at the same place at the same time. Ferraris, Hughes helicopter, Vanagons and Hawaii (my family owned three Vanagons, we vacationed in Hawaii, I play the bass and used to work for Hughes Aircraft Company) - what could be better?

I don’t remember that version at all but I didn’t start watching it until the second or third season since my sisters wanted to watch something else. Probably Mork & Mindy.

That particular 308 GTS inspired an excellent feature, back in the day

, but it was going to be the car for the TV show.

I watched the hell out of that show back in the day, but I don’t remember that theme at all. When I saw Omer’s post, I went looking to confirm that Mike Post had indeed written the theme everybody knows, as I had remembered. This is some great music, though, and I’m glad I found it (and that you posted it).
All that being said, this is still the greatest TV theme ever. The brass countermelody in the second verse was always my favorite part.

I’m in Honolulu right now. I have not seen a 308 or the chopper. I have seen plenty of Hawaiian shirts and mustaches.

Apparently the original theme was used for only the first nine episodes of season one. Something interesting about this theme is the name of the composer - Ian Freebairn-Smith. That name sounds incredibly British, but, like John Hillerm an, he is actually American.
I love the Hawaii Five-O theme as well. Growing up in SoCal, beach music was just normal, and my dad had plenty of albums of this genre. It’s interesting that you mention the horns considering what you do for a living, just how I like the bass parts in the song I posted and I happen to play the bass.

Heck, come to St Louis and you can find Aloha shirts and mustaches - they happen to be wherever I am. No Ferrari or choppers, sadly...

Oh, and I love a good bass line. I like to cast my attention all around a band and listen to different elements. So many bass players, at least in rock, can be nothing more then I-IV- V-I. I love really melodic bass players. Flea comes to mind, as does John Entwistle. But I’m also a huge Who fan.

One of my (many) musical challenges is the whole keeping time thing, and the idea of playing along with the drummer as part of a rhythm section is not how I like to play. I prefer being more improvisational, treating the instrument as something that can be soloed, like in a good jazz trio. And the sound of a fretless bass just gets me all excited.
I’ve probably listened to everything that Jaco Pastorius ever recorded and just love his sound, but then get pissed off that he had to die so young from something relatively preventable. But then again, some of the greatest musicians have never been known for being mentally stable people...

OK, the scales have fallen from my eyes. I also accept that Simon and Simon are not really brothers, just on TV (they look nothing alike). Is there aything else from the 80's that wasn’t real? Should I not be terrified of Clubber Lang?
this is comedy gold.
